Beloveds, I’m excited to share an article I’ve been working on closely with my friend and colleague Krupa Shandilya, Associate Professor of Sexuality, Women’s and Gender Studies at Amherst College, on AI and the limits of translation.
Krupa and I met at Friday evening gatherings near Columbia where we read and interpreted Urdu poetry, together with Fran Pritchett and many other lovers and scholars of Urdu. Recently, we came together to translate an excerpt of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem Mulāqāt and analyze ChatGPT’s translation of the same verses.
